Nagaland NSF observes 79th Foundation Day in Kohima

CorrespondentKOHIMA, OCT 29 (NPN)

Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) observed its 79th Foundation Day at the Naga Solidarity Park here on Wednesday.
Speaking on the occasion, former president of NSF, Achumbemo Kikon, MLA, asserted that NSF, formed on October 29, 1947, was an organization born from suffering—created “to protect the rights, to promote values, and to safeguard Nagas in our land.”
Stating that 1947 as a watershed moment that reshaped the world, he cited the partition of British India, the UN vote on Palestine, and the Truman Doctrine. “These events highlighted the importance of 1947 in shaping global politics, economies, and societies,” Kikon stated.
He stated that Nagas were also “active participants in this historic year.” Following a meeting with Mahatma Gandhi in July 1947, he said Naga elders declared their independence on August 14, 1947. “This declaration marked a crucial moment in the Naga people’s struggle for self-determination,” he said, asserting that the Nagas never consented to join the Indian Union and rejected labels of secessionism.
Kikon advised the younger generation against taking their privileges for granted and urged them to be mindful of their heritage. “I would only like to impress upon the youngsters that they must know from where we have come, how long we have struggled,” he said.
MLA said that the Government of India had historically treated the Naga issue as a political matter of “External Affairs,” not a law-and-order problem, as reflected in the 16-point agreement and Article 371A of the Constitution. Kikon, however, expressed strong dissatisfaction with certain policies including Restricted Area Permits and the proposed fencing of Naga areas, which he said undermined Naga dignity and divides their territories.
He alleged that government of India gives the Nagas a stepmotherly treatment.
Kikon said Nagas were not criminal or animals that could be pushed around as they like.
He reminded Naga youngsters they have so many ways to protect their history and urged them to save the Naga history.
Reaffirming his commitment to the cause, Kikon said his membership in a regional party was intentional, to keep fighting for Naga people and for the rights of Nagas.
In his address, NSF president Mteisuding paid homage to the federation’s founders, whom he called “dreamers, torchbearers and nation-builders.”
He acknowledged the “spirit” of the founding fathers and mothers, which “continues to dwell in our hearts, in every act of service and in every call for Naga unity and self-determination.”
Mteisuding also expressed deep respect for all past NSF leaders whose commitment carried the movement forward.
Reflecting on the NSF’s journey, he acknowledged its role in championing education, advocating for Naga rights, and speaking against injustice.
NSF president called for unity, reconciliation, and the courage to “rise above tribal lines, political differences, and geographical divisions.” He urged the younger generation to “embrace the truth that the Naga people are one with a shared destiny.”
Mteisuding reaffirmed NSF’s commitment to being “a voice for justice, a guardian of Naga identity, and a bridge between generations.” The 79th Foundation Day, he noted, serves as a reminder of the NSF’s “defining spirit of unity, sacrifice, and service.”
The programme concluded with a pledge of solidarity, a special prayer for NSF seniors led by Khotuo Richa, and closing remarks from NSF general secretary Kenilo Kent.
The event was chaired by NSF vice president Vimeyiekho Vitso; Rev. Fr. Mhabemo Mathew Humtsoe offered invocation and Bweni Kent and Neila Thaprii presented a special song.
Several dignitaries including Dr. Neingulo Krome of the Naga People’s Movement Human Rights and former NSF president Vipopal Kintso also spoke at the programme. A special prayer for NSF seniors was led by Khedi Baptist Church assoc. pastor Khotuo Richa.
