NPMC postcard campaign demands implementation of women’s quota

DIMAPUR: The Nagaland Pradesh Mahila Congress (NPMC) on Thursday organised a programme under the theme, “Nationwide Postcard Campaign for Immediate Implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023” at Congress Bhavan, Kohima, demanding the immediate implementation of 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and State Assemblies.
According to a press release, the programme was attended by Mahila Congress leaders, district representatives, party workers and supporters from across the state.
Addressing the gathering, speakers said the Congress party has consistently supported women’s political empowerment, from strengthening Panchayati Raj institutions under the leadership of late Rajiv Gandhi to advocating reservation for women in legislative bodies.
The leaders criticised the BJP-led government for passing the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam without ensuring its immediate implementation, alleging that linking the reservation to future census and delimitation exercises would result in unnecessary delays.
The programme also highlighted concerns that delimitation based solely on future population figures could affect federal balance and reduce representation for states that have effectively controlled population growth. Speakers maintained that women’s constitutional rights should not be delayed due to administrative or political considerations.
During the event, the Mahila Congress demanded immediate implementation of the 33 per cent reservation for women, a transparent roadmap for its implementation, protection of federal balance, representation for OBC women, and meaningful political empowerment.
The speakers asserted that women across the country are seeking equal participation, dignity and representation in democratic institutions rather than symbolic assurances. They also acknowledged the significant contribution of women from Northeast India in leadership, social development and democratic participation.
The programme concluded with a collective appeal to the Government of India to implement women’s reservation through the existing Parliamentary and Assembly constituencies without further delay.
The event was followed by a postcard campaign, signature drive, lunch and a press conference.
