An orientation and sensitisation programme under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) was organised by the Kohima district administration in collaboration with District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW) at D Block Panchayat Hall Kohima, Friday.
A press release by DHEW stated that in a keynote address, Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC) Kohima, Nodal Officer, Mission Shakti, Moasunep K. Jingru gave a brief introduction of the BBBP scheme and urged the society not to discriminate the girls as they are not lesser than boys. He also asserted the importance of empowering girls to break down the stereotypical gender roles in the society. District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Kohima panel lawyer and advocate, Nagali Shohe highlighted the various laws and Acts pertaining to the girl child. She spoke on POCSO Act, sexual offences, right to education, child marriage and child labour.
Shohe also stated the different ways through which a victims could get legal remedies.
Speaking on “sexual health, menstrual health and mental health,” medical officer Jakhama, Dr. Vijoho talked about the social and cultural taboos connected to these three issues and how to overcome it. He also emphasised on the dangers of early pregnancy and the issue of anxiety and depression in women.
One Stop Centre (OSC) Kohima centre administrator, Toli K. Assumi highlighted the gathering on OSC and on the issues faced by women and girls like domestic violence, sexual assault, cybercrimes and rape.
Assumi said women and girls could avail services like lodging FIR, legal assistance, medical care, counselling and temporary shelter at OSC. She added that services could be availed by contacting the following numbers – Childline- 1098, 181, and 112 for emergency cases.
Highlighting the gathering on Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) Scheme, DEO for PMMVY, DHEW Kohima, Vimenu Richa explained at length the objectives of the scheme, who can apply, documents required and where to apply.
The programme was chaired by DHEW Kohima, gender specialist, Vikeduozo Sorhie, invocation was said by T.P Thapa, Kharazu Christian Revival Church and vote of thanks by D Block Panchayat, joint secretary, Bodin Pradan.
