DIMAPUR, MAY 15 (NPN): Three civil society organisations (CSOs) from Peren district—Nagaland Zeliang People Organization (NZPO), Zeliangrong Baudi (ZB) and Kuki Inpi Nagaland (KIN)—have strongly condemned the recent violence in Manipur, including the killing of church leaders and the reported kidnapping involving members of different communities.
In a joint statement, NZPO president Zandi Domta, KIN president L. Singsit and ZB president K. Francis Zeliang described the incidents as “ugly and barbaric” and said such acts should not take place between “brothers,” especially among tribal Christian communities.
Peren CSOs also strongly condemned the killing of church leaders as well as the taking hostage of innocent citizens from both communities, terming such actions “highly condemnable and reprehensible.”
Appealing for peace and restraint, the three organizations urged the people of Peren district in particular, and Nagaland in general, especially members of the Zeliangrong and Kuki communities, not to allow the incidents to adversely affect the longstanding peaceful coexistence among the tribes.
They also cautioned individuals and groups against taking the law into their own hands or acting on emotional outbursts. CSOs urged the public to immediately report any untoward incident to community leaders so that the situation could be contained without escalation.
The organisations further appealed for the immediate and safe release of all innocent individuals reportedly taken hostage.
