Razeba Public Organization opposes proposed radar system at Pfutsero

DIMAPUR: Razeba Public Organization (RPO) has expressed strong opposition to the proposed installation of an advanced Mountain Radar System at Pfutsero and extended solidarity with the Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO) and local residents.
In a press release, RPO cited serious concerns over the project’s potential long-term environmental damage and its adverse impact on sustainable tourism in the region. It said that Pfutsero and its surrounding areas constituted a fragile highland ecosystem of significant ecological value. RPO warned that the project would involve extensive land alteration, vegetation clearance, and infrastructure development, leading to irreversible changes, biodiversity loss, and disruption to endemic flora and fauna.
Further, RPO raised concerns about the radar system’s operational impact, including electromagnetic emissions and continuous mechanical activity, on wildlife behaviour and habitat stability. The organisation has called for a rigorous, transparent, and independent environmental impact assessment before any decision was made.
Also, highlighting the threat to Pfutsero’s emerging eco-tourism economy, RPO noted that the area’s scenic beauty, climate, and tranquillity were central to its appeal. It expressed apprehension that introduction of large-scale defence infrastructure could diminish its attractiveness and affect community-based livelihoods. RPO said it strongly opposed the use of indigenous land for militarization without prior and informed consent of local communities, emphasizing issues of land rights, community autonomy, and long-term social consequences.
Therefore, the organisation has urged the responsible authorities to reconsider the project’s location and ensure any decision was preceded by comprehensive impact assessments and meaningful consultation with stakeholders.
