Students sensitized on ‘legal measures’

Legal awareness programme on “gender sensitive legal measures” for students of GHSS Pfutsero and Phek was organized by Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD) in collaboration with National Service Scheme (NSS) from March 30 to 31 at the school premises. 
Resource person, lawyer Akumla Longchari, spoke on the topic “online violence and exploitation of women and children.” She said social media has made lives so interesting, fast and easy however, with all the benefits there were also some dangers. She therefore, cautioned the students to be more vigilant while using social media. She also added that men were also victims of cyber crime but women and children were more vulnerable.
Resource person, lawyer Wapanginla Kichu, spoke on the topic “human trafficking and immoral trafficking (prevention) act”. She said human trafficking was the worse form of modern day exploitation and has became a major concern for the people of Nagaland where many young boys and girls were taken outside of the state under the pretext of education or job and ended up being victims of commercial sexual exploitation, street begging, prostitute, child labour, drug smuggling or even a victim of organ removal. She also said that human trafficking was the fastest growing trans-national criminal organisation flourishing trade to the tune of 8 billion dollars in a year.  She further highlighted some of the important legal provision under immoral trafficking (prevention) act 1956 and urged the students to be watchful.
Lawyer Neiteo Koza, in her topic presentation on “basic legal rights” said that as a citizen of India “one” should be aware of the fundamental rights provided by the constitution. She stated that the fundamental rights enshrined in the constitution were “inviolable and no law could be in derogation” of these rights.  She also gave detailed explanations of the rights and privileges which were provided to the people to enjoy and seek protection at the same time. She also urged the students to respect and abide by the laws which could help in achieving peace and harmony in the society. 
Constitutional provisions and other legal provisions of law regarding gender equality was presented by Mamang Singson, while a topic on the social aspect on gender equality in Nagaland was presented by Chitho Nyusou.  The programmes were chaired by para legal volunteers Gyateh Marhu and Zukhovolu while welcome address was delivered by principal Pfutsero Higher Secondary School, Vecukhoyi and principal, Phek Government Higher Secondary School, Y.P Singh respectively.
