Suspected B’deshi smuggler shot dead by BSF in Tripura

Agartala, Aug 9 (PTI): A suspected Bangladeshi smuggler who entered India was shot dead by BSF personnel in Tripura’s Ukakoti district, police said on Sunday. During routine patrolling along the Indo-Bangla border at Maguruli under Irani police station on Saturday night, BSF jawans spotted movement of a group of suspected Bangladeshi smugglers.
“When jawans challenged the smugglers, they tried to attack the troops with lethal weapons. In self-defence, BSF personnel opened fire, and the group managed to flee under the cover of darkness,” Unakoti district SP Rishabh said.
He said that during a search, the bullet-riddled body of a suspected smuggler, identified as Tara Miah (24) of Dashteki in Maulvibazar district of Bangladesh, was found on the Indian side. “The body was taken for postmortem on Sunday morning. After fulfilling all legal formalities, the body will be handed over to his family through the Bangladesh Border Guard,” he said.
