National vice president of the National People’s Party (NPP), Vevoyi W.D. Vadeo, has called upon women of the Secheku area to break free from traditional boundaries and take the lead in entrepreneurship, education, and leadership to build a sustainable and progressive future.
He was speaking at the 29th general session of the Secheku Women Welfare Society, hosted by the Zhavame Women Society at St. Xavier Catholic Church Jubilee Hall, Zhavame on Saturday.
Vadeo acknowledged the tireless contributions of women to society, often unseen and unrecognised, likening them to honeybees whose labour benefits all. He stated that the undervaluing of women stems from internalised inferiority and misapplication of traditional roles, but clarified that Naga customs are complementary, not discriminatory.
Highlighting women’s economic role in farming, weaving, and handicrafts, he urged them to revolutionise their mindset and expand their impact across all spheres. He emphasised education as the key to empowerment and called for greater support of local entrepreneurs and institutions to prevent economic drain.
On leadership, Vadeo encouraged women to step forward and take active roles in decision-making, stating that reluctance limits their potential. He urged capable women not to rely solely on symbolic roles or reservations.
Lauding the unity of the Secheku community, he described it as the cornerstone of Chakhesang strength and called for continued harmony across sub-dialects.
Delivering greetings, Chakhesang Mothers Association (CMA) general secretary, Kezevinuo Krome, challenged women to uphold their hardworking nature and focus on their children’s development. Earlier, Dezele Thopi, in her presidential address, described women as caregivers and urged them to embrace positive change to unlock their potential.
