Wokha, May 25 (NPN): Wokha Town Council (WTC) has cautioned residents against improper disposal of waste, warning that strict action would be taken against violators.
Addressing a press conference at its office on May 25, chairperson Myingthungo Kikon said lack of awareness and non-compliance in waste segregation continued to hinder effective waste collection and disposal in the town. Despite repeated advisories, he noted that many residents still failed to properly segregate dry, wet, sanitary and e-waste at source.
Citing a Supreme Court directive, Kikon informed that the Council would no longer collect improperly segregated waste and urged citizens to strictly follow segregation guidelines. He added that a stakeholders’ meeting had earlier been held with business unions and scrap dealers to strengthen waste management practices.
According to WTC, dry waste and e-waste should be handed over to scrap pickers, while wet waste can be composted for kitchen gardening. The Council will collect sanitary waste every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and residents were urged to deposit segregated waste at designated points within specified timings.
Deputy chairperson Nzano P. Kikon cautioned against indiscriminate dumping of waste into drains, streams and rivers, stating that such practices blocked drainage, damaged roads and created health hazards. She also warned against improper disposal of animal carcasses in public areas.
WTC member Mhao Ngullie raised concerns over suspected swine flu cases among pigs in the district. Officials informed that import of new pig consignments into Wokha had been suspended until further notice, while samples were sent for testing. Ngullie said existing pig stocks would be inspected by the Department of Animal Husbandry to ensure safe consumption.
The Town Council assured that all possible measures would be adopted to improve waste management and sanitation, while appealing to the public to cooperate with authorities and act responsibly in maintaining cleanliness and public health.
